The ‘de’ in Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850) was self-styled. His grandfather’s surname was Balssa, which was changed to Balzac by his father because of its peasant connotations. The famous French novelist and short story writer used a number of other pseudonyms ranging from Henri B. to Lord R’hoone – the latter an anagram of his Christian name.
