Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter (1981) is an American recording artist and actress, born and raised in Houston, Texas. Her father Mathew Knowles was a Xerox sales manager and her mother Celestine Ann ‘Tina’ Beyincé was a hair salon owner. Beyoncé's name is a tribute to her mother's maiden name.
Beyoncé performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child, and became famous in the late 1990s as lead singer of R&B girl-group Destiny's Child. In October 2001, the group announced a hiatus to further pursue their solo careers.
Beyoncé's first solo recording was a feature on Jay-Z's ‘03 Bonnie & Clyde’, released in October 2002, peaking at number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. On April 4, 2008, Beyoncé married Jay-Z. She publicly revealed their marriage in a video montage at the listening party for her third studio album ‘I Am... Sasha Fierce’, which was also the introduction of Beyoncé's alter ego Sasha Fierce. This alter ego was conceived during the making of her 2003 single ‘Crazy in Love’.
Beyoncé originally created the alter ego Sasha Fierce to keep her stage persona separate from who she really is. She described Sasha as being ‘too aggressive, too strong, too sassy and too sexy’, stating, ‘I'm not like her in real life at all.’ Then in a magazine interview in February 2010 Beyoncé said she was comfortable enough with herself to no longer need Sasha Fierce. However in May 2012 she announced that she would bring Sasha back for her ‘Revel Presents: Beyoncé Live’ shows later that month.
In July 2009, Beyoncé and her mother launched a junior label, ‘Sasha Fierce for Deréon’ (referring to Deréon, the contemporary women's fashion line that they introduced in 2005), for back-to-school apparel.
Beyoncé appeared on her husband’s twelfth studio album ‘Magna Carta... Holy Grail’, where she was credited as Third Ward Trill.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z have a daughter, Blue Ivy.
